The Real Reason Why ‘Home Porn’ Gives the Porn Industry the Blues

I was reading an interesting article at the Guardian over the weekend: Home porn gives industry the blues.

Sites like and including YouPorn and Pornotube have got some in the porn industry worried. This isn’t exactly new, the industry has been discussing this ‘problem’ for awhile now. Farley Cahen, an editor at Adult Video News is quoted as saying, “The problem is that more and more people are finding out about these sites and that they can get this free content.” And basically, that in a nutshell is the thrust of the article in question.

What I’ve found in my experience in working in the porn industry as a promoter of gay porn is that people will still buy porn DVDs and people will still buy memberships to membership sites and they’ll even willingly re-bill.

But the catch is, they’ll only do so if the product isn’t crap.

Porn consumers today have a wide variety of choices and some of those choices are indeed free. If one is given the choice of paying large sums for crap and paying large sums of re-bills for sites that don’t update or don’t provide what the consumer thinks they should be getting for their hard earned dollar, then its obvious that they’re going to go looking for alternatives, including the free porn.

The solution is simple. Provide a great product at a fair price that people want. That doesn’t mean that the price has to be cheap; if the product actually warrants it, people will pay for it, if its good and if its something that they actually want.
