Have a Gay Memorial Day!
Happy Memorial Day to my American visitors!
I’m not American so I had to do a bit of checking to see just what it was all about. Kind of funny because here in Canada we hear about The Memorial Day events, parties and sales all the time on telly.
Originally, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day and it began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After the first world war, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action.
According to wikipedia the the Indianapolis 500 has been a Memorial Day tradition since 1911. What car racing has to do with honoring fallen servicemen I have no idea. I noticed in a number of news articles today that they suggest shopping til you drop as one Memorial Day activity.
Some Americans also view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer. I’ve heard that before — something about changing your purse color to white after Memorial Day…
Holidays are weird; I think it’s safe to say that the meaning of Memorial Day has greatly changed over the years.
